Annotating Ontologies with Descriptions of Vagueness

چکیده
Vagueness is a common linguistic phenomenon manifested by predicates that lack clear applicability conditions and boundaries such as High, Expert or Bad. The usage of vague terminology in ontology entities can hamper the latter’s quality, primarily in terms of shareability and meaning explicitness. In this paper we present the Vagueness Ontology, a metaontology that enables the explicit identification and description of vague entities and their vagueness-related characteristics in ontologies, so as to make the latter’s meaning more explicit.

A Metaontology for Annotating Ontology Entities with Vagueness Descriptions
The emergence in the last years of initiatives like the Linked Open Data (LOD) has led to a significant increase in the amount of structured semantic data on the Web. Central role to this development has been played by ontologies, as these enable the representation of real world domains in an explicit and formal way and, thus, the production of commonly understood and shareable semantic data. N...
متن کاملThe Role of Vague Categories in Semantic and Adaptive Web Interfaces
Current Semantic Web technologies provide a logic-based framework for the development of advanced, adaptive applications based on ontologies. But the experience in using them has shown that, in some cases, it would be convenient to extend its logic support to handle vagueness and imprecision in some way. In this paper, the role of vagueness in the description of Web user interface characteristi...
متن کاملA Survey of the Semantic Specification of Sensors
Semantic sensor networks use declarative descriptions of sensors promote reuse and integration, and to help solve the difficulties of installing, querying and maintaining complex, heterogeneous sensor networks. This paper reviews the state of the art for the semantic specification of sensors, one of the fundamental technologies in the semantic sensor network vision. Twelve sensor ontologies are...
متن کاملDescribing faces: conventionalizing ontologies through dialogic interaction
INTRODUCTION • Although we are highly efficient at recognizing faces, we find it remarkably difficult to describe them to others, posing a challenge for forensic sciences. • This difficulty stems in part from the problem of expressing configural information about faces in words. • Previous research has shown that when interlocutors encounter a domain for which they have only vague descriptions,...
متن کاملBRIDGING THE GAP OF SEMANTIC SERVICE DESCRIPTION WITH TAGGING APPROACH FOR PERVASIVE WEB-BASED LEARNING Boung-Yew
Semantic Web Services (SWS) offer the possibility of adapting services to the context of the service requesters, where relevant services can be quickly discovered and orchestrated to compose situated applications. Most existing work has focused on formal service descriptions constructed from expertly designed ontologies. However, constant changes in pervasive learning domain demand technically ...
